When we finally ran out of our Earth Mama diaper balm, it felt like the right moment to make our own. That little jar lasted nearly eighteen months, and I’ve always appreciated how effective simple herbal formulas can be for sensitive baby skin.

Now that I’m studying herbalism and building my home apothecary, I wanted to try a diaper cream using herbs I trust and already have on hand.

I followed a recipe from Natural Remedies for Kids by Kate Tietje & Bob Zajac, M.D., using the same ingredients and changing the ratios just a bit while adapting the method to fit how I prefer to work. I also learned quickly just how much beeswax affects the final texture of a salve.

Herbal Diaper Cream Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon dried lavender buds
  • 1 tablespoon dried calendula flowers
  • 1 tablespoon dried chamomile flowers
  • 1/4 cup apricot kernel oil
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon beeswax
Method (Crock Pot Infusion)
  1. Place the dried herbs and oils into a crock pot.
  2. Turn it on low just until the oil feels warm, then turn it off completely.
  3. Allow the herbs to steep in the warm oil for 30–40 minutes.
  4. Strain the oil through cheesecloth and return the infused oil to gentle heat, never allowing a boil.
  5. Add the beeswax and stir until fully melted. I found great success in using the warming feature on the crock pot to melt the beeswax.
  6. Pour into a clean glass jar and allow it to cool completely before sealing.

Stored in a cool, dry place, this diaper cream will keep for up to one year.

How We Use It

We apply a small amount to the diaper area as needed. This herbal diaper cream has been helpful for mild diaper rash, irritated or sore skin, dry patches, and small scrapes. It’s gent
le enough for regular use and safe for cloth diapers.

For external use only. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.
