One of the most common questions I get is, “How much of this should I use?”
The honest answer is that herbal dosing isn’t exact. These are general starting ranges for adults, not precision formulas.
For most gentle, everyday herbs, this is where I suggest beginning.
A Quick Note
I’m not a medical professional, and this isn’t medical advice. I don’t diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease.
This information is educational and rooted in traditional herbal practice and personal study. If you’re pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a health condition, speak with a qualified healthcare provider before starting herbs.
Tea (Infusion) Dosing
Basic starting ratio:
1 teaspoon dried herb per cup of water
2 teaspoons fresh herb per cup of water
From there:
Lower range:
½ cup, 2–3 times per day
Higher range:
Up to 1 quart throughout the day
Teas are generally more nourishing and less intense than tinctures. They’re well suited for daily support and long-term use, especially with mineral-rich or gentle nervous system herbs.
If someone is new to herbs, tea is usually a great place to start.
Tincture Dosing
Tinctures are more concentrated and act more quickly.
Lower range:
1 dropperful, 2–3 times per day
Higher range:
2–3 dropperfuls, 3–4 times per day
I tend to think of tinctures as more targeted or short-term support, especially for acute situations. They’re efficient, but they’re stronger.
Herbs Can Feel Different for Different People
This is important.
Herbs don’t act the same way in every body.
Your:
- Body size
- Digestive strength
- Stress level
- Gut health
- Sleep patterns
All influence how you respond.
That’s why herbalism is personal. What works well for your friend may feel subtle to you, or vice versa. That isn’t failure. It’s physiology.
The goal isn’t to force results. It’s to work with your body and adjust thoughtfully.
Herbalism is a relationship.
It takes attention, patience, and a willingness to observe your own body.
Start low. Pay attention. Adjust slowly.
That’s where confidence is built.
